How To Prepare Your Boat for Hurricane Season

July 8, 2025 Charles Skinner

As hurricane season approaches, boat owners along the coast are reminded that preparation isn’t just smart - it’s essential. Tropical storms can drive quickly and cause costly damage to vessels, docks, and marine infrastructure. Fortunately, a few proactive steps can help protect your boat - and your peace of mind.

  1. Review Your Insurance Coverage

Before the weather turns, take time to read through your marine insurance policy. Pay special attention to:

    • Named storm deductibles - these are often higher than your standard deductible. know what yours is.

    • Haul-out provisions - some policies may reimburse you for moving your boat to safer ground.

    • Exclusions - ensure wind, flood, and storm surge are covered.

    • Navigation limits - make sure your coverage applies where you plan to store your vessel during a storm.

If you’re unsure about any part of your policy, call your marine insurance agent. A quick conversation now could prevent major headaches later.

  2. Make a Hurricane Plan for Your Vessel

Every boat should have a storm plan - whether it’s kept at a marina or on a trailer. Consider:

    • Where will your boat go during a storm? Hauling it out ans storing it inland is often safest.

    • Who will secure it if you're out of town? Assign a trusted person to carry out your plan if needed.

    • What supplies do you need on hand? Lines, chafe protection, fenders, and duct tape go fast before storms.

Pro tip: Keep your hurricane plan written down and share it with your marina or dockmaster.

  3. Take Preventive Action Early

Don’t wait until the forecast turns. As soon as a storm is named:

    • Remove all valuables and electronics from the boat

    • Secure loose items on deck or bring them ashore (bimini tops, cushions, dinghies)

    • Double up dock lines and add chafe guards

    • Seal hatches and cover vents to reduce water intrusion

    • Shut off fuels lines and disconnect batteries

For trailer boats, park on high ground, remove the drain plug, and lash the boat to anchors or heavy blocks.

  4. Document Everything

Take clear photos of your boat - inside and out - before a storm hits. If you need to file a claim, having this visual documentation can help speed up the process and protect your interests.

  5. Stay Informed and Be Flexible

Coastal storms can change direction quickly. Monitor NOAA updates, follow local advisories, and be ready to act fast. Your safety comes first - never risk staying behind to secure your boat once conditions turn dangerous.

    Need Help Reviewing Your Policy?

Storms are unpredictable. Your insurance coverage shouldn’t be. If you have questions about your current marine policy - or aren't sure if your boat is fully protected - reach out to our team today. We’re here to help you navigate hurricane season with confidence.
